There is a lot of talk and confusion out there with the fitness industry. Constantly there are new tips or emerging ideas for how to lose weight and get the best body you can. I think the biggest thing right now is IIFYM or macro counting. I think this is probably one of the better things to take over the internet and fitness industry. It definitely has some backbone behind it. The reason I think it is so great? It stresses getting enough protein in your diet.
First off I want to dispel the negative thoughts I know most women will have. NO it will not make you bulky. While it does help you build lean muscle, I repeat protein WILL NOT MAKE YOU BULKY. Got it? Good, moving on.
Why you need more protein to lose weight
#1: It feeds the fire aka your metabolism
Simply put, your metabolism is what burns calories and turns them into energy for your body to use. Some people love their metabolism and some people blame all their weightloss issues on their metabolism.
How does protein help with this? It takes more calories (higher metabolism) to burn/convert protein into energy for your body than it does to convert carbs. This is the thermic effect of the macro, meaning a bigger portion of calories gets burned during digestion to break down protein.
#2: Promotes muscle repair and growth
I want to reiterate my above statement. Just because you have muscle growth does not mean you will be getting bulky. Final time.
When you are consistently working out both with intense cardio as well as strength training you are breaking down muscle. This is the process of improving. You break the muscle down with micro-tears it then rebuilds and increases your strength/training potential/whatever you are aiming for. In order to rebuild and repair those micro-tears to make you better, you guessed it. You need protein!
#3: Muscle burns fat
That is the common statement. What it means is that in order to burn fat you need muscle. As you increase muscle mass through the above methods, you will actually burn more calories throughout the day.
Basically #2 and #3 could be combined I suppose.
#4: Curbs and Satisfies
High protein meals helps people stay full longer. It keeps the hunger monster at bay and keeps you from eating extra calories throughout the day. Due to the slow digestion process that burns a lot of calories that we talked about earlier it stays with you longer. Therefore, helping you stay full and satisfied longer.
My favorite protein? Idealfit protein. Period. End of discussion on that one!
